Chili ID

Data educating app about chili peppers

Chili ID is an app designed for the purpose of data intervention, to educate chili pepper lovers around the world. Users will simply scan chili peppers or import images from their library to get informed about the name, taste, level of spiciness, origin, and so on. The app is designed to mimic the purpose of Wikipedia, for the users to get information in order to shop wisely.

Favourite dish

The initial idea came from the previous data story project about chili peppers. The data story project began with writing down dishes/desserts I like, and the food ingredients that are used to cook them.

Data story

The dish I chose was Yukgejang, the spicy meat stew in South Korea. The top ingredient of this dish was powdered pepper, so I started to research spicy chili peppers. The more I researched about it, the more extensive the data it became. Therefore, I decided to create a data story website that could organize & visualize the data I collected.

The website contains a series of data visualization about chili peppers - chili pepper production, consumption in the world, hottest chili peppers and its Scoville units, and so on.

Data intervention

The next challenge was to plan and design a data intervention taking place in physical space. The goal was to engage the public with the app to educate and inform about the previous data story about chili peppers. I decided to design a chili identifier app to achieve my desired purpose.

Process - Adobe XD

The main graphics of Chili ID were first designed in Illustrator, then imported to Adobe XD to apply simple interaction and navigation.
